Travel Outside the U.S. While on OPT – Can I re-enter the U.S.?

Posted on | May 21, 2010 | Comments Off

1. If your OPT application is pending and your I-20 has expired, it is not recommended to travel outside the U.S. Your re-entry may be denied. If you decide to travel, make sure that you take I-797 receipt notice.

2. If your OPT application is approved (and you have your EAD card), but you do not have a job offer, your OPT ends and you cannot reenter.

3. If your OPT application is approved (and you have your EAD card), and you have a job or job offer, you may leave and re-enter the U.S.. If you decided to travel, make sure that you take a job offer letter on official letterhead which should include your expected start date or a letter from your employer indicating that they approve your travel and listing the date you return.
